Postponement of 8th Biennial EAAPP Conference 2021

Tentative New Conference Dates: 31st July – 4th August 4, 2022

Venue: Arusha, Tanzania

As you all know our next biennial conference was proposed to be held in Arusha, Tanzania next summer 2021. However, after carefully assessing the COVID-19 situation over the last couple of months, with the significant lead time necessary for the EAAPP Secretariat to apply for funding to support the conference and to allow students other scholars to apply for funding to attend the conference, the EAAPP Secretariat has reached a conclusion to postpone its eighth conference until 2022, tentatively July 31-August 4, which we will still plan to hold in Arusha. We understand that every day brings uncertainty and anxiety surrounding this global pandemic, and as our daily reality remains in constant flux, we believe that this decision will provide the best solution to our concerns on the safety of our members and conference participants, as well as logistical hurdles. The decision to shift our conferences to even years beginning in 2022 may eliminate recent conflicts with other professional meetings, which are also held during odd years and draw interest among EAAPP members.

Also, owing to COVID-19 related health advisories, quarantines, travel bans around the world, and uncertainty on restrictions on international mobility, we recognize that our conference is not likely be held under normal conditions. While we weighed the option of conducting the meeting virtually next summer, we felt that this option was not viable due to inclusivity and equity issues. We recognize that many of our members in African countries would be grossly disadvantaged due to a lack of adequate infrastructure and resources to participate in the conference virtually. We also realized that differences in time zones would further complicate the meeting organization, as the majority of our members reside across Sub-Saharan Africa, the USA, and Europe. Finally, we recognize the significant networking benefits our in-person conferences confer on students and younger scholars from African countries, which we felt were not easily replicated in an online conference format.

We will send out more information about the 2022 conference as time gets closer.

Stay safe!

Thank you.
